Psych safety is not the goal
To begin our exploration of healthy conflict, we started by defining psychological safety.
Next we need to realize that psychological safety is critical, but it is not the goal.
The goal is to make a difference for the people we seek to serve.
Psychological safety, learning, excellence—all essential—are part of how we make our difference.
If we don't have the ability to speak up and have candid conversation—a synonym for "conflict," in my mind—then the actual work isn't going to go as well as it could. What psychological safety enables better work in service of our goal.
Without psychological safety, we are leaving value on the table.
